SUMMARY:Voices from the Coast: Podcasting Risk\, Resilience\, and Communication
DESCRIPTION:Register Here \nHave you considered podcasting as a way to communicate with your audience? Podcasting can be a great knowledge mobilization tool for any organization or individual – from students to researchers or research groups\, to practitioners (like emergency planners)\, or NGOs. For coastal risk communication\, it can be a ‘new-to-you’ way to reach your audience\, for example\, with emergency preparedness information or to build relationships by interviewing local communication or preparedness professionals and their audiences. It’s a great way for people to share their on-the-ground experiences as well\, which helps messages to resonate. We have additional resources I’ll share with the registrants as well. \nJoin us online\, June 18\, 2025\, at 10:00 am PT | 1:00 pm ET | 2:00 pm AT | 2:30 pm NL for Voices from the Coast: Podcasting Risk\, Resilience\, and Communication. We are excited to welcome two Canadian podcasters who will share their perspectives as podcast hosts and producers and discuss topics such as selecting platforms and technologies\, generating podcast topics\, selecting and interviewing guests\, the successes and challenges they’ve encountered\, and more. We will have ample time for discussion and questions during the one-hour webinar. You are welcome to forward this invitation to others whom you think might be interested. \nPRESENTERS \nAngela Antle is the 2025 Rachel Carson Writer in Residence at Germany’s LMU\, a former CBC producer\, and interdisciplinary PhD candidate at Memorial University in St. John’s\, Newfoundland. She is the producer and host of the podcast GYRE and a member of Norway’s Empowered Futures: A Global Research School Navigating the Social and Environmental Controversies of Low-Carbon Energy Transitions. Her research intersects climate communications and justice\, disinformation\, petrocultures\, energy futures\, and political rhetoric. Featured Episode: GYRE-Nonhumans (offshore oil\, North Atlantic\, Right Whales\, storytelling for empathy) \nMichelle Brake is the Technical Marketing Manager at Esri Canada and the host of Geographical Thinking\, the company’s podcast that highlights how geographic information systems (GIS) are transforming the way we understand and interact with the world around us. In her role\, Michelle engages with GIS professionals and thought leaders from across industries to explore real-world applications of spatial technology. With a background in geography and a passion for clear\, compelling storytelling\, she brings a unique ability to connect technical concepts with practical insights. Michelle’s work focuses on making GIS more accessible and relevant to a broad audience—whether you’re a seasoned analyst or just discovering the power of place. SUMMARY:Living the Lessons: From Impact to Insight - CRNHet Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Symposium will take place from May 12-15\, 2026 at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton\, Alberta. NAIT is located on Treaty Six territory\, a traditional homeland for the First Nations and Métis Peoples\, and today we acknowledge that all of us are part of treaty land. The traditional name is Amiskwaciy Waskahikan [A-misk-wu-chee-wah-sku-hee-gun]\, which is also known as the City of Edmonton. \nThis year’s theme “Living the Lessons: From Impact to Insight” reflects a growing urgency to not only learn the lessons of the past but evolve our approach to disaster risk reduction to prepare for a more uncertain future. The time for incremental improvement has passed. From wildfires and floods to pandemics and cascading system failures\, we are living through an era of compounding risks and profound disruption. To meet this moment\, we must turn impact into insight\, and insight into action in order to build stronger\, more inclusive communities. \nWe invite you to submit a proposal that reflects your work\, research\, or experience in advancing resilience and learning from disruption through sessions designed to spark conversation and encourage participation from all attendees. \nThis call for proposal describes the themes\, session types\, and submission guidelines. The symposium includes both in-person and online components. \nNOTE: Theme: Understanding Risk and Reducing Impact \nEffective disaster risk reduction begins with understanding risk. This theme focuses on how we assess\, interpret\, and communicate hazard and risk information to drive decision-making and meaningful action. \nPossible topics include: \n\nRisk assessment methods and findings\nIntegrating science and local knowledge\nTranslating insight into policy and practice\n\nThe deadline for applications is Sunday\, November 2\, 2025.
